Earthenware albarello, glazed, Syria, 12th century
The design of this Islamic drug jar is typical for the region in terms of size, shape and decoration – although they are very difficult to date because the style changed very little over time. The jar’s contents would have been protected using an age-old technique – a parchment or vellum cover tied with string. This jar was made in Persia – modern day Iran.
