Albarello, blue tin-glazed earthenware, used for cinchona bark, Spanish, 18th century
Chinae was a Latin word used by those working with medicines to describe cinchona. Quinine is the component of cinchona bark which was used to treat and prevent malaria. Besides being used to treat malaria, cinchona bark was also a pain and fever reliever. Quinine is extracted by a complex chemical process.
