Earthenware drug jar, glazed, with wooden stand, late T'ang dynasty, Chinese, 618 - 906 CE
Apothecaries used vessels to store dried herbs, minerals and other medicines. This earthenware jar example dates from the late T'ang dynasty (618-906CE). It has a glazed surface. This means it could be easily cleaned. Small delicate handles indicate it was not meant for heavy substances.
