Decorative vase, polychrome maiolica from Deruta, late C16 or early C17, showing head of Philomena and Ruggiero

Painted on the earthenware jar are the bust of Philomena (on the right) and Ruggiero (on the left). Pairs like this, accompanied by their names, recurs frequently in 16th and 17th century maiolica produced in central Italy. They belong to a broader decorative tradition depicting busts of famous heroes and heroines, painted in a classicising style.

Here A158048 and A158049, with their snake-like handles, are shown together.
