Talk With Me! Barbie doll, with original packaging, 1997. The doll sits at a computer, which contained an infared system which enable her face and mouth to move as she speaks. The phrases she can speak came on a CD Rom, including names - if the name of the doll owner was not included, they could order a custom name from Mattel.

Part of a broad suite of Babrie toy sets which included CD Roms in the mid 1990s, Talk With Me! Barbie was part of a growing market of multimedia toys for children that were designed to work with household computers, taking advantage in the growth of home computing. Between 1997 and 2001, this and other Barbie multimedia toys were marketed under the "Barbie Software for Girls" label.

Talk With Me! Barbie doll, released in 1997. A caucasian Barbie doll with long blonde hair and a fringe, in a pink body suit and gold and pink jacket, pink high heels, and with a built-in gold necklace. She has a pink desk unit with a blue office chair, and an off-white desktop computer and monitor on the desk.The monitor and desktop computer feature stickers, and are branded with Intel Inside.

There is a full-sized cable attached to the computer and desk, with a nine pin serial port to connect to a computer. When connected and used in conjunction with the accompanying CD Rom, the doll "speaks", moving her mouth in time with recorded speech, activated by an infrared transmitter in the computer monitor, and picked up by a receiver built in to the doll's necklace.

The box lists that there are over 14,000 names available on the CD Rom. Additional names for the doll to say could be downloaded from the Mattel Media website when the toy came out. Custom names could be ordered from Mattel by calling a 1-800 number in the USA, if a doll owner's name was not available in the bank of downloadable names.
