Large coil of submarine coaxial cable incorporating a flexible telephone repeater, unknown maker, probably America, 1950-1960.
Repeaters with flexible housings could pass through a ship's laying out gear and into the water at a normal speed, meaning that the cable should be laid without the ship having to stop. This type of repeater was designed by Bell Laboratories in the United States, and was used for the Atlantic portion of the TAT-1, the first transatlantic telephone cable, in 1956.
