Black leather boot for deformed foot, from the Lord Mayor Treloar Orthopaedic Hospital, Alton, Hampshire, England, 1940-1965

Made especially for a patient with disfigured foot, the shoe was collected from the Lord Mayor Treloar Orthopaedic Hospital in Alton, Hampshire, England. Founded in 1908, the hospital specialised in treating children with orthopaedic conditions – primarily caused by tuberculosis and polio. In 1949, the adjacent Lord Mayor Treloar College opened, which provided training and education for young people affected in this way. It is still in operation today.
