The British Rail Class 37 is a diesel-electric locomotive, also known as the English Electric Type 3.
British Rail had published its Modernisation Plan in December 1954, with the intention to bring the railway system up to date and help to counter the financial deficit under which BR were operating. The aim was to make rail travel more attractive, both to passengers and freight operators, at a time when road travel was becoming increasingly popular.
The Class 37s were part of this plan to modernise the rail network, and 309 of these locomotives were built between 1959 and 1965. Designed for both passenger and freight workings, the Class 37s were used across the whole network, with passenger operations being mainly used in the Eastern Region.
D6700 was the first of its Class to be built, and was selected for preservation upon being withdrawn from service.
