Spring-driven Bracket Clock by Isaac Thuret

A bracket clock made by Isaac Thuret, Paris, France, 1665-1670. It is signed 'I Thuret A Paris' on a cartouche located below the numeral 'VI' on the dial.
This clock was made by Louis XIV's clockmaker, Isaac Thuret.
The pendulum clock had recently been invented by Dutchman Christiaan Huygens, who patented it in 1657. It was a major technical innovation which radically improved the accuracy of timekeeping, with implications for fields such as astronomy.
Huygens was swiftly invited to join the French Academy of Sciences, where he worked with Thuret.
