Ticket, South Eastern Railway, for the platform of Dover Station on the occasion of the arrival of their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of the French on Monday 16th April, 1855, white card bearing SER crest.

Napoleon III was the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. He had initially taken the position of President of France in 1848, before declaring himself the Emperor in 1852. During his rule, Napoleon III was keen to maintain positive relations with Britain. This cooperation was especially necessary as France and Britain were allies against Russia in the Crimean War.

In an effort to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, Napoleon III and his wife the Empress Eugénie made a state visit to Britain. Prince Albert had met the Imperial couple at Dover and had escorted them on the train to Windsor. While at Windsor, Napoleon III was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter in order to cement this stronger bond.
