Synchilla fleece hat, Patagonia, 2002. This type of fleece is made from recycled plastic drinks bottles.

The Patagonia Synchilla Fleece Hat, made of recycled fleece fibres, is an example of sustainable innovation and corporate responsibility in response to climate change and pollution. It highlights a wider shift during the 1990s and early 2000s from virgin petroleum-based materials to recycled plastics, aligning with themes of waste reduction, renewable resources, and circular manufacturing. It shows how companies like Patagonia responded to environmental pressures and consumer demand for eco-conscious products.

Patagonia is an outdoor clothing company with environmentalism and social responsibility at the core of its brand. However, in the 1980s, Patagonia’s research team developed the Synchilla ("synthetic chinchilla") fleece fabric, a synthetic alternative to wool that relied heavily on the use of virgin polyester made from petroleum-based fibers. Synchilla is lightweight, durable, moisture-wicking, insulating, and quick-drying, which makes it highly marketable to their consumer base. Many other companies rapidly followed suit, developing other synthetic insulation fabrics, which led to a surge in garment waste and contributed to the support of the fossil fuel industry. In the early 1990s, Patagonia recognized Synchilla had become a major part of their brand but conflicted with their mission. By 1993, after Patagonia heavily invested in R&D and partnered with other companies, they successfully developed recycled polyester fibres from recycled plastic bottles (PET 1, polyethylene terephthalate, commonly used for single-use bottles and containers). The original garments were soda-bottle green, and over time, they found new ways to introduce different dyes to these recycled fabrics. Patagonia has committed to using recycled fibres for all its clothing and is working toward a circular clothing manufacturing process that eliminates excessive waste.

As a new recycled material, the Patagonia Synchilla Fleece Hat represents a positive development in clothing technology, utilizing sustainable materials. As stated by its internal label, the hat is constructed from 100% polyester, and, at the time of its entry into the museum, it was marketed to consumers as a “good and innovative example of recycling.”

The Patagonia Synchilla Fleece Hat is designed to promote recycling by being made from reused materials. Furthermore, its fabrication relies on renewable resources and contributes to a circular manufacturing process with carbon-neutral goals. It provides insight into corporate responses to environmental protection movements and laws at the turn of the millennium, as companies satisfy consumer demand for eco-conscious products. Its design minimizes environmental impact throughout their lifecycle, from material extraction to disposal, prioritize efficient manufacturing processes, and minimize packaging waste while remaining economically viable and socially responsible.

This hat represents the delicate partnership between individual consumption and corporate responsibility when addressing climate change.
