The Woods Printing Press was previously housed in the grade II listed building Northcliffe House, London, which made up part of the infamous Fleet Street. It was used to print the Daily Mail and Evening News between 1935 and 1987. used to print the Daily Mail and Evening News between 1935 – 1987, printing over 2,000,000,000 newspaper copies over its lifetime.
The press is made of three tiers. The lower tier was located in the basement of Northcliffe House and consisted of the magazine reels and the large electrical motor. The remainder of the press was above ground. The middle tier is where the printing and folding units were placed with a walkway around the outside. The upper tier was similar to the middle with the main difference being it had less printing units and more rollers which were used to separate out the paper web as it was printed. This was required as the press printed the papers double sided, continuously and very fast with the capability to print 576,000 12 page newspapers an hour.
