William James Chaplin was a road coach proprietor in partnership with B.W. Horne and built the largest coaching and carrying business in Britain by 1840. With the development of the railways, and recognising the effect on the coaching business, Chaplin moved the business into being carriers for railway companies. He invested in the London and Southampton Railway (later the London & South Western Railway) and became Chairman. The company provided cartage services for several railway companies. Chaplins continued to be cartage agents for the Southern Railway through to nationlisation in 1948.
