[Ms. letter] 1823 May 23, St.Petersburg, to an unnamed correspondent, [probably to Henry Maudslay or Joshua Field] / William Handyside. [Long interesting letter giving news after the winter's break in communications. Comments on very depressed state of Russian economy; on Russian interest in 'Mr Perkins' new engine'; unfavourably on engineering schemes and building priorities in St. Petersburg. Asks for news of steam boat development. Has 'lighted our manufactory with gas', and discusses attempt to introduce gas lighting in the city. Sends drawings (not present) of a stationary engine and of hemp-pressing equipment. Hopes his correspondent will visit Russia. 4p. on 1 leaf]
