Share certificate for the Stockton & Hartlepool Railway Company, debenture no. 5 in the sum of £500 dated 31st October 1839. "The undersigned Directors of the Stockton & Hartlepool Railway Company promise to pay to William Hogarth, William Riddell and Thomas Witham or bear on the 15th January 1845 the sum of Five Hundred Pounds." On the reverse, handwritten "Received the within mentioned sum of £500 and all interest due thereon dated at Darlington this fourteenth day of January 1845 for William Riddell, Thomas Witham and self." Signed and witnessed.
