- PART OF:
- Collection of Indian pharmaceuticals
Container for 30 tablets of Thiacetazone & Isoniazid, a treatment for tuberculosis (TB) in brown glass bottle by Pfizer Ltd., Thane, India,1980. One of a selection of drugs and related material from India, 1975-1980.
Thiacetazone and Isoniazid provide a combination medication that has been used to treat tuberculosis (TB). Isoniazid is a strong antibiotic that acts by preventing cell-wall growth in the bacteria that causes TB, but due to the drug resistance that could be quickly developed it has usually been used in combination with other drugs. Thiacetazone is a weaker companion drug but one that acts against such bacterial resistance.
Historically the combination was often seen as a low-cost option, but its use has been significantly reduced due to potentially severe adverse risks, particularly in patients with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
