706L telephone in blue, PL59/2, designed by the General Post Office and Ericsson Telephones Limited, British, 1959-1967.

When this phone was brought out in 1959, it was called the 'Modern Phone'. The use of plastic meant that more colours could be produced than just the standard black. It was also one of the first phones to have a spiralling wire. The 'L' indicated that the dial is lettered. With its later development, the type 746, it was the standard telephone available for subscribers to rent from the Post Office until the 1980s.
