"Patent Gear" lawnmower by Ransome 1880-1890, push type, prior to chain drive
This is a push-type manual lawnmower with gear drive, made before chain drive was introduced. It is from a very large collection of lawnmowers brought together by an individual family. A selection was acquired by the Science Museum to illustrate a number of stories relating to the history of grass-cutting, including the technology, the social context and sporting associations.
