The plates, taken in April 1919, show the leg bones of a patient who was under the treatment of pioneering orthopaedic surgeon Sir Robert Jones. The identity of the patient is unknown, but from a museum viewpoint they can be taken as physical symbols of the huge number of musculo-skeletal injuries that were a characteristic of First World War casualties.
