Two glass x-ray plates taken at Shepherd’s Bush Military Orthopaedic Hospital, London, England, 1919

Two glass x-ray plates, in cardboard box, showing the leg bones of a patient under the treatment of pioneering orthopaedic surgeon, Sir Robert Jones, almost certainly taken at The Shepherd's Bush Military Orthopaedic Hospital, April 1919.

The plates, taken in April 1919, show the leg bones of a patient who was under the treatment of pioneering orthopaedic surgeon Sir Robert Jones. The identity of the patient is unknown, but from a museum viewpoint they can be taken as physical symbols of the huge number of musculo-skeletal injuries that were a characteristic of First World War casualties.
