The Great Northern Railway Sick and Funeral Allowance Fund Statement of Receipts and Payments for the Year 1893, issued 22 May 1894.

The rail industry was a very dangerous one. Accidents and fatalities were common and thousand of people were affected. In response, many societies set up sick and funeral funds. A worker would pay into the fund and then, should an accident occur, the worker or their family would be compensated out of this fund. This type of scheme was uncommon and was not offered in many other industrial jobs. Benefits, such as these funds, made the rail industry more attractive as it offered a level of security that would not have been accessible in other manual occupations.
