Demonstration model Ferranti television receiver chassis

The first television broadcasts in the UK were made in 1929 - but they used John Logie Baird's electromechanical system. All-electronic television systems were developed during the 1930s, and transmissions began in November 1936.

This receiver was made in 1937, by the British firm Ferranti, for a special exhibition in the Museum. It is not marked with the manufacturer's name because at the time the Science Museum was a government department and could not be seen to favour one manufacturer over another.
