BCW No. 1808 coach, railway carriage, wood paneled, with bunk seats upholstered in green leather, built for use on Rhodesia Railways subsequently operated by the Zambezi Sawmills Railway (also known as the Mulobezi Railway). Length 60' 6"; width 8'; height 12'.

The railway plays a significant part in the story of Rhodesia. This is partly due to British Colonial Administrator Cecil Rhodes, from whom the region took its name, and his vision of a ‘Cape to Cairo’ line - a railway stretching the entire length of Africa. In Rhodesia the railway played a key role in industries of extraction, namely gold, copper and coal.This carriage was exported in 1928 to serve as a first class carriage on Rhodesia Railways. In the 1950s it was converted to a first/second class sleeper carriage. In the mid-twentieth century an ‘industrial colour bar’ existed for Rhodesia Railways’ staff, effectively banning Black African workers from certain positions on the railway. The carriage finished its working life on the Zambezi Sawmills Railway. In the 1970s, the carriage was donated to artist and conservationist David Shepherd by then President of Zambia, Kenneth Kaunda. Shepherd had previously donated a helicopter to Zambia to help prevent poaching. He received the carriage in return and brought it back to England in 1975.
