Main part of Cryogenic Magnetic Resonance Imaging Machine and associated computing equipment by Data General, 1980.
Installed at Hammersmith Hospital in London in 1982, this MRI machine was the first of its kind installed in the United Kingdom. It is also thought to have been one of the longest serving in the world. It was finally withdrawn in 1992.
MRI builds up a picture of the human body by using high frequency radio waves. It is considered to be a safer diagnostic tool than X-rays and is more suitable for soft tissue. The machine was made by the American manufacturer Data General.
