Mahogany case with two microscope objectives, Jena, Germany, 1875-1900

Mahogany case with two Zeiss objectives (labelled 'A' & 'D') for compound monocular microscope, signed by Charles Baker of London, late 19th century

This microscope and its two objective lenses were made by Carl Zeiss, although the case is of English origin. German-made Zeiss objective lenses were popular with English microscopists and histologists as many had trained or been educated in Germany. The discipline of histology had developed in the well-equipped laboratories of the German universities, which were unmatched anywhere else in Europe. The lenses and case are shown with a student microscope (A56390).
