Perspex model of a house, showing ring main system of domestic electric power distribution, by Workshops of the Science Museum, London, England, 1957

The British system for plugs and sockets started before the Second World War at a time where there was a shortage of copper for cables. The 'ring main' system was devised to reduce the amount of copper needed in cables inside each house or office.
