Photograph of Drill, Hearth, Drill-bow, and Hand-piece, found by Prof. W. M. Flinders Petrie at Kahun, Egypt, XIIth Dynasty, 3400-3259 B.C. (see his "Civilization of the XIIth Dynasty", p. 29); the fire-drill represented, being some five thousand years old, is probably the most ancient fire-making appliance of wood known to exist.
