Game-Counter (diam 3/4 in) of thin copper; circular; on each side, a design, engraved (not stamped); on obverse, a street-seller of flints and steels, half-length, in costume of about 1615 (namely, doublet, with wide-collar, trunk-hose, and broad-brimmed hat), carrying his trade-stock in a large sack thrown over his left shoulder; in his left hand, a fire-steel; in his right hand, a flint, with which he strikes off sparks (shown) as he walks along; back-ground shaded; the design surrounded by a broad border inscribed, in Roman capitals, BYE A STEELE OR A TINDER BOX; on reverse, a large Tudor rose, stalked, slipped, and seeded, with cross-hatched background, the whole surrounded by a narrow plain border; believed to be a trial-piece, intended as a design for one of a set of counters (probably twenty or twenty-five), in silver, for use in playing games, but rejected as being too small, no such set being known to exist; probably designed and engraved by Simon van de Passe (? 1595-1647), a well-known Dutch engraver who settled in London, or one of his brothers; an interesting numismatic piece, probably unique; date about 1615. England.
