Fire-steel (length 4 1/2 ins) of unusual, but elegant, type; consists of a thin ribbon-like strip of iron (width 3/4 in), with a loose ring at top (for suspension from a belt) and a blunt point at bottom, both sides affording a striking-face; pierced near each end by three round holes, each with a narrow lining of gold; the centre portion also pierced, the space being filled by elegant coiled inserted tracery, secured by a brazing of copper. Probably France or Italy.
