Pocket-knife with horn handle
Pocket-knife (length 3 1/2 ins), having horn handle and one broad pointed blade (stamped "31 Besset"), the back of which has been used as a fire-steel. Spain. [NB: one of eight specimens (nos. 512-519). Five are ordinary pocket-knives, the backs of which are either intended for use as fire-steels or have been used as such. In the case of the other three, the back of the knife-blade has been so used.] [NB: Other fire-steels, not catalogued above, will be found among the contents of various tinder-boxes and tinder-pouches noticed hereafter. These are, however, all of ordinary types noticed above.]
