Tinder-box, containing flint, steel and smoker's outfit, France, 1800-1850
Tinder-box (length 6 3/4 ins) containing flint, steel, and smoker's outfit, all of extremely-superior quality; case of wood, shallow, oval, with hinged lid kept closed by a snap-catch; case lined with red velvet, cover lined with silk; exterior covered with fine brown leather and stamped on top with the initials "C.R." beneath a nobleman's coronet; inside are a small pocket tinder-box (length 2 1/8 ins), of bronze gilt, with hinged lid, each side bearing a running pattern of foliage, exquisitely chased, with a design in high relief mounted in the centre - on one side, a vine with grapes, on the other, a dove among foliage, both of exceedingly-fine workmanship - a steel, affixed to edge of box, has its sides chased and damascened in gold; contains flint (a small piece of agate, cut and polished); tube (length 3 3/8 ins) for match-tinder, of brass gilt, covered externally by a design in high relief representing a climbing vine, bearing many bunches of grapes, with a serpent climbing up its stem, the whole beautifully executed; top of tube closed by metal cap secured by a fine gold chain to a ring held in mouth of the climbing serpent; also a cigar-holder (length 3 1/2 ins), of brass gilt, decorated by minute bunches of grapes and provided with a spring in form of another serpent, coiled; stamped on bottom of case, "Tallin, 151 Palais "Royal"; early 19th century.
