Tinder-box (depth 4 ins) of thin iron; canister-shaped, oval, with slip-on lid; contains steel (of early Scandinavian type) and tinder (fungus); loop on back for attachment to belt; in lid, a small metal loop, holding a cotton wick, enabling it to be used as an oil lamp; found on a dead Russian soldier during Crimean War, 1854-6. Russia.
