Tinder-box (length 2 ins); semi-circular, with very heavy steel rivetted to straight side; on lid, a large bird among flowers and foliage, engraved; on bottom, a similar design, engraved; stamped inside "André (?) Burrye"; probably 17th century. ? France or Italy. [One of 34 examples (nos. 730-763) ... of various shapes and materials. All are of iron unless otherwise described. Some are plain, but most are more-or-less elegant, both in shape and decoration. All are probably European.]
