Tinder-box (length 2 1/4 ins); roughly rectangular, but with rounded front corners; hinged lid held closed by a sliding catch; in back, a small longitudinal compartment (probably for sulphur-matches), closed at end by a sliding lid; steel (longer than box) rivetted on to back; no decoration; contains a small pistol-flint and pieces of amadou; bought in 1903 in Antwerp. Belgium. [One of 34 examples (nos. 730-763) ... of various shapes and materials. All are of iron unless otherwise described. Some are plain, but most are more-or-less elegant, both in shape and decoration. All are probably European.]
