Tinder-box (length 2 ins); rectangular; lid hinged at back and held closed by a snap-catch; steel (stamped "Karlsbad") rivetted on back; lid and edges cut and engraved; two polished rectangular sections of stalactite mounted on lid; contains pistol-flint and short length of match-tinder. Austria. [One of 34 examples (nos. 730-763) ... of various shapes and materials. All are of iron unless otherwise described. Some are plain, but most are more-or-less elegant, both in shape and decoration. All are probably European.]
