Tinder-box (length 1 3/4 in) of silver; rectangular, with steel on back; on lid, a classical design, including two angels, embossed; on bottom, a floral design, embossed; on sides a zig-zag design, engraved; steel roughened on one side for use as a striker for friction-matches; probably about 1840. ? France. [One of 34 examples (nos. 730-763) ... of various shapes and materials. All are of iron unless otherwise described. Some are plain, but most are more-or-less elegant, both in shape and decoration. All are probably European.]
