Tinder-box (length 2 1/4 ins) of cast steel; rectangular
Tinder-box (length 2 1/4 ins) of cast steel; rectangular, with oblique corners; steel on back; a very fine example of pierced steel casting, the apertures allowing red cloth, stretched on cardboard below, to show through, both back and front; lid bears a head, bearded and very well executed (evidently a portrait), in high relief, within a flowing floral border; bottom bears a cherub wrestling with a cock, within a similar border (slightly mutilated). ? France. [One of 34 examples (nos. 730-763) ... of various shapes and materials. All are of iron unless otherwise described. Some are plain, but most are more-or-less elegant, both in shape and decoration. All are probably European.]
