Tinder-pouch (4 3/4 ins) of red leather, kept closed by a pointed tuck-in flap, pierced by brass eyelet holes; contains two pockets; one contains broad-faced steel, with two recurved almost-straight tangs, slightly curled at tip (similar to two others from Palestine already described (see nos. 484-485) and a small gun-flint of the Albanian type (see nos. 152-160); exterior stamped with black lines and "1883", the latter several times repeated; a belt of red leather attached at top. Tinder is usually fungus-tinder, but often match-tinder in the form of cotton threads loosely twisted into cord an d inserted into a small bamboo tube or hollow stick].
