Tinder-pouch (breadth 7 1/2 ins) of buff leather, with angular patches of red leather sewn on; flask-shaped, the neck closed by a thong of red leather run in; contains flint (a rough lump of milky quartz), steel (small and plain), tinder (undyed cotton threads, loosely twisted to form a cord, and contained in a short tinder-tube formed roughly from a piece of hollow stick); attached is a narrow belt of leather, one half dyed red, the other half buff; from Rajpootana. India. [One of 14 examples (nos 939-952). All ASiatic. Most designed to be suspended from a belt or girdle. Steel is usually carried inside the pouch together with flint and tinder. Tinder is usually fungus-tinder, but often match-tinder in the form of cotton threads loosely twisted into cord an d inserted into a small bamboo tube or hollow stick].
