Tinder-pistol (length 7 1/4 ins) of bright steel, with straight wooden coffee-pot handle of ebony; an unusual form, the pistol-mechanism being arranged on the sides of a flat strip of iron; the whole contrivance mounted on an iron pedestal rising from a large flat round foot ornamentally engraved to represent conventionally either leaves or the open petals of a flower; no receptacle for sulphur-matches; traces of gold inlay remain in the engraved lines on the sides of the iron body-strip and the upper side of the foot; probably early 18th century. Italy. [Nos 1047-1075 are all of iron or brass and have wooden butts. All have external mechanisms].
