Tinder-pistol (length 6 5/8 ins) of brass, with iron mechanism and wooden butt; large flat rectangular compartment for matches, etc., at front of body, with lid at side; on top thereof, large tinder-pan, still containing rag-tinder; candle-socket (originally affixed near front) broken off and missing; body slightly engraved; inscribed on sides "Jno. Jones & Co., Birm'm"; late 18th century. England. [Nos 1078-1097 have the pistol-action mechanism enclosed in the body of the pistol].
