Tinder-pistol (length 8 1/4 ins) of iron, with wooden butt; candle-socket on side; receptacle for sulphur-matches and tinder in front, closed at end by a sliding lid; inscribed on one side of body "Gille", on the other "Laurent"; probably 18th century. France. [Nos 1078-1097 have the pistol-action mechanism enclosed in the body of the pistol].
