Tinder-pistol (length 8 ins) of brass, with mechanism of iron and wooden butt; candle-socket at side; in front is an iron barrel (evidently a later addition), oval in section, the fore end closed by a hinged lid, affording a receptacle for sulphur-matches and spare tinder; ornamental brass foot (probably that belonging originally to the pistol before alteration) soldered on to fore end of barrel; 18th century.
