Tinder-pistol contained in a rectangular box of brass (length 4 1/2 ins) having a sliding lid, on which is slight ornamental engraving and a boss, bearing a lion's face, which serves as a thumb-hold when sliding the lid open or shut; rest of surface plain; the whole stands on three short iron feet and the trigger; inside is a compartment for sulphur-matches, spare tinder, etc.; when the pistol-action is fired, a candle is lighted and raised upright from the interior; probably 18th century. Germany.
