Tinder-pistol combined with an alarm-clock (clock-movement missing); both contained in a rectangular box (length 6 1/4 ins) of bronze-gilt, standing on four very small feet; when the alarm rang, it fired the pistol, which ignited a priming of gun-powder, which lighted a candle, which then sprang up from the interior; the pistol-action could also be fired independently of the alarm-clock by means of a trigger projecting from one end; inside is a special compartment, with hinged lid of its own, for sulphur-matches, tinder, etc.; slight ornamental engraving on brass lid of box; inscribed on back "Fromery à Berlin" (see no. 1030); late 17th or early 18th century.
