Locket-like Pistol Tinder-box (length 1 1/2 in) of frosted brass; on top, a number of small flowers in copper and silver-gilt, inlaid; a very unusual example in that it lacks flint and steel, their place being taken by a plain hammer and a small anvil, ignition being effected by means of an amorce, or percussion-cap of paper, placed upon the anvil, upon which the hammer descends.[Nos 1140-1160 'all belong to an exceedingly well-marked form of the tinder-pistol which is confined entirely to Japan. Externally, most of them bear no resemblance ... to a pistol, ... the mechanism being enclosed in a locket-like box... The locket-case is always of metal ... Inside the box is the pistol action'.]
