Match-box (3 1/8 x 1 3/4 x 7/8 ins) of cardboard; rectangular, with slip-on lid; exterior covered with apple-green paper; on top, a white paper label, rudely printed in brown, "N. Jones & Co. Royal Patent Lucifers", with representations of an Englishman and a Highlander, both smoking, also two serpents breathing out flames, the Royal Arms in centre, and, at bottom, instructions for ignition and a guarantee; contains full complement of about 100 Matches (2 3/4 x 1/8 x 1/16 ins), sulphur-dipped, with heads of black sulphide of antimony, and a piece of stiff folded cardboard (2 x 1 1/4 ins), pinkish-red one side, white the other, for ignition purposes; date about 1830 or 1831. England.
