[details from cat no. 1551] Match-box (2 1/4 x 1 1/2 x 3/4 ins) of thin chip and cardboard; rectangular; sliding; one side sanded in black; on top, a buff paper label, printed in black, "Specimen of ye Slight Improvement on John Walker's Friction Lights, as Made by Ricd Bell & Co., London, in the year A.D. 1832"; contains about 100 square wooden Matches (length 2 ins) of Congreve type (totally unlike Walker's), sulphur-dipped, with small red heads; evidently intended for advertising or exhibition purposes; date probably about 1885. England.
