Box (2 1/8 x 1 1/2 and 3/4 ins) of Vestas; rectangular; on top, a small metal socket for holding a match; consists of two perpendicular compartments; contains almost full complement of about 100 slender wax Vestas (length 1 3/4 in), their stems variously coloured white, red, yellow, green, and blue, their tips much flattened and dipped very lightly in red inflaming-composition; apparently made under Newton's patent. England. [Small box of thin sheet iron, hinged lid, painted bronze-green on outside. Bears small oval metal panel stamped in relief, "B. Martin & Co's Royal Patent, London,". Probably dates to approx. 1835].
