FPP CCD80 charge coupled device, as used in Focal Plane Package for Hinode mission

This charge coupled device (CCD) was used to study our nearest star, and was central to NASA and JAXA's cooperation through the construction of a large Solar Optical Telescope developed for the Hinode (formerly Solar-B) mission launched in 2006.

The CCD used in Hinode’s optical X-ray telescope recorded how energy stored in and released by the magnetic field spreads through the sun's atmosphere, helping scientists understand the origin of the violent power of the sun.
