MERIS charge coupled device, as used in MERIS (MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) instrument of Envisat earth observation satellite
The Charge Coupled Device (CCD) used for the MERIS mission was an incredibly important tool for measuring climate change, particularly for the observation of oceans, atmosphere and land.
MERIS was a medium spectral resolution imaging spectrometer operating in the solar reflective spectral range. The MERIS scanned the earth through the 'push broom' method with the CCDs providing spatial sampling.
The CCDs were instrumental to the study of the photosynthetic potential of algae, detection of yellow dissolved organic material, detection of suspended river borne sediments), as well as water quality, pollution and coastal erosion detection.
